The Guide To RVing With Cats

When we first got into rv living, one of the biggest concerns I had was how to travel with cats and how to get them used to the rv life.

Considering cats are sensitive creatures, RVing with cats can be tricky and will need careful planning for them to be comfortable in a rv camper, especially if you are like us who actually travel with our camper and are not stationary.

With the right cat essentials, RVing with your cats will be a lot easier for them to handle and help them quickly get used to the rv lifestyle!

After all, as fellow cat parents, we really want your precious fur babies to be as comfortable as possible!

Therefore, here is the ultimate guide to RVing with cats!

Have a proper scratching post

Having a proper scratching post is ESSENTIAL for a cat in order to prevent them from scratching up any furniture in the rv.

Trust me when I say this is the utmost important cat essential for your cat to have in a rv camper, especially since cats will be more tempted to scratch your furniture up in a small space (like a motorhome).

Before we got into the rv lifestyle, the cats had quite a large scratching post from living in apartments for so long, but now we’ve had to go with some smaller scratching posts to satisfy their scratching needs.

We got this adorable cactus scratching post and it has definitely been quite used by our two fur babies.

I recommend setting this scratching post by furniture you don’t want your fur babies to ruin.

That way, they are most fixated on scratching the post than your furniture!

Window perch

You will have to measure out your window in your camper, but having a window perch is a great way for your fur baby to get some sunbathing.

Most of us know that cats love to look out the window and these foldable window perches are PERFECT for easy rv storage.

It’s so simple to set up and all you have to do is suction cup onto the window of your motorhome!

These window perches can hold up to 40 lbs, so these perches should be able to withstand the weight of most cats.

I also love how budget-friendly they are for a pack of two window perches!

So now, each of my kitties get their own window perch!

Travel litter box

Of course, having a travel litter box is a cat essential for any kind of travel, whether that’s going on a road trip or rv travel!

Before we got our motorhome, we were living in hotels for a while, but that ended really quickly considering how difficult it was to get into cat-friendly hotels.

Within the short amount of time that we were traveling with cats, we had a portable litter box that could be folded down for easy storage and travel!

This was a great rv storage idea and I’ve seen many people get creative with how they set up their litter boxes for their feline friends!

With this litter box, it comes with a compartment for your litter box scooper and for your bags, so that you don’t have to be concerned with the mess!

It was great to have until we decided to upgrade to an automatic litter box later on.

Regardless, whether you are RVing with your cat or traveling with your cat on the road, this litter box was a good investment if you want an enclosed litter box.

Pro tip: make sure you don’t fill the litter box up with TOO much litter. Only put in the amount that is necessary. We found that putting in too much litter unfolds the litter box when you carry it around by its handle!

Cat hut

It’s important to have a variety of places when rving with cats.

I ended up getting this cat hut because one, the aesthetic went perfectly with our camper.

Two, this hut acts for both a place for my cats to snuggle into, as well as a tabletop, so we tend to place items on the tabletop of the hut.

It was a win-win for all of us considering you have to get creative with our space when living in a rv home.

Get whatever will fit your cat’s needs, but investing into a hut will give your fur baby more spaces to cozy up into!

Water fountain

When rv living with your cat, you never know what kind of water you are dealing with.

Depending on the state, you never know how clean the water is at the rv parks.

If you wouldn’t drink tap water without a filter, then I don’t see why your cat should!

We have always had a water fountain that comes with filters for our cats. Plus, water fountains are great because it promotes cats to drink more water.

I’m not sure if it’s because it’s running water or what the idea is behind cats liking water fountains, but we recently got this water fountain for Christmas since our old water fountain stopped working properly.

The first thing that drew my eye was the aesthetic and how freaking CUTE this water fountain is!

I was surprised to see this on Amazon, since I never seen anything like it in stores!

Not only that, but this water fountain is FAR easier to clean since it comes with less parts. It’s also ceramic, so it’s a bit hefty, but the quality is NICE.

It was super easy to put together and this one comes with extra filters, which is so nice on our part. The instructions say to swap out the filters once every week, but honestly, from our experience, these filters don’t get filthy quickly, so we change them out every few weeks.

I just love this water fountain and it’s small and compact enough that it doesn’t get in our way in the camper home!

To all fellow cat owners, please make sure your fur baby has filtered water when rving with your cat, because the water in each state DOES make a difference!

Toy basket

Of course, having cat toys are cat essentials that you can’t miss out!

I mean, what else is your feline friend supposed to do in a camper?

We have plenty of toys for the cats to play with and if you are looking for something to put your cat toys in, this toy basket was such a cute idea when I saw it at Petsmart!

I just like to have all their toys in this toy basket and sometimes, they will act like literal children and take the toys out themselves.

It’s fashionable and functionable!
